From Laventhol & Horwath to founding a 31-year firm, now focused on select personal advisory — Alan brings four decades of elite tax counsel directly to you. No handoffs. No compromises.
In the tax industry, you meet the senior partner — then your finances get passed to junior staff. You pay premium rates for entry-level work, and deductions get left on the table.
Alan Balmer, PC is the antidote. Every spreadsheet, every S-Corp model, every IRS letter, and every line item on your return is personally drafted and reviewed by a CPA with over 40 years of experience. Large-firm rigor meets single-CPA accountability.
From a Big Seven auditor in Washington, D.C. to founding a firm that incubated industries, to a focused solo practice serving select clients nationwide.
Alan began his career at what was then the 7th-largest international accounting firm in the U.S. Working as a staff auditor in a fast-paced capital market environment taught him the rigid compliance methodologies, forensic examination standards, and technical research skills required to defend tax filings at the highest level.
In 1984, Alan founded a multi-accountant firm that became a unique national incubator for early-stage industries. For 31 years, he served as the primary financial architect for hundreds of entrepreneurs — guiding startups from formation through S-Corp structuring to nine-figure exits.
Over his career, Alan has served as trusted personal tax advisor to approximately two dozen HNW families and family offices managing assets exceeding $100 Million. These relationships span 20 to 30 years — a testament to absolute discretion, consistency, and alignment with his clients' financial legacies.
For over two decades, Alan served as financial controller for a globally recognized non-profit corporation. Operating as a virtual controller, he integrated the firm's full suite of accounting, payroll compliance, tax preparation, and tax-exempt filings to support nationwide operations.
Now focused on select personal advisory, Alan brings four decades of experience to clients across all 50 states. He maintains comprehensive expertise in individual and corporate tax structures, multi-state filing, S-Corp optimization, and niche services like HARPTA exemptions. Every client gets direct access to the CPA.

In 1984, Alan founded Balmer, Nelson & Van Mersbergen in Fairfield, Iowa. Over 31 years, the firm grew to serve more than 400 clients with a staff of four to five accountants. Fairfield became an unexpected incubator — a small town that drew entrepreneurs from across the country, many relocating with no jobs and no local network. Alan became the CPA these founders turned to, guiding thousands of businesses from formation through growth, including companies that pioneered entire industries: infomercial production and distribution, oil brokerage, sports collectibles, and direct-response retail. Several clients built businesses that went public or sold for nine figures.
For over 20 years, Alan simultaneously served as financial controller for The Art of Living Foundation, a $12 million national non-profit. Rather than a traditional engagement, he integrated his firm's full capabilities — bookkeeping, tax preparation, technical research, and tax-exempt filings — into the organization's operations, providing a level of vertical support that a single in-house hire could not match.
Because his Fairfield clients relocated across the country over the years, Alan learned to navigate the tax codes of all 50 states. He understands the framework of any state's tax structure — the advantages, the pitfalls, and the filing requirements — and can get up to speed quickly on state-specific issues. This nationwide capability is a core part of his practice today.
Alan is particularly known for his work with S-Corporations, helping business owners minimize tax liability through proper structuring. He also specializes in IRS problem resolution — audits, penalty abatements, back taxes, levies — and in obtaining HARPTA exemptions for non-residents selling Hawaii real estate.
Today, Alan operates a solo practice from Argyle, Texas, serving select clients across the country. Every return, every filing, every piece of counsel is handled personally by a CPA with 40 years at the top of the profession — not delegated, not outsourced, not handed off.
